About Us
Our Story
York Regional Police – The Integrated Strategic Community Advisory Council (ISCAC) is a partnership between police and community that works to develop strategies to enhance community safety.
The project began in 2013 when it was decided that a more proactive approach was necessary to educate and engage the community to advance a stronger proactive approach to community policing. Growing trends regarding major crimes required new ideas in the growing technological world.
Drugs, vice, human trafficking, guns and gangs, auto theft, cyber crimes, hate crimes and bullying etc., are issues that affect our society, and the community is needed to work with police to ensure the safety and security of the world where they, their children, grandchildren and future generations can enjoy and do business.
York Region is one of Canada’s most diverse communities and a melting pot of history, culture and tradition. Our membership in ISCAC from within the community and from within YRP is reflective the demographics of the region.
We first had to select strategic community liaisons with knowledge and experience in areas of community concern, as well as individuals with legal, accounting, security, technology, marketing, government experience and social trends to help develop and navigate new and exciting programs forward.
First ISCAC developed, “What to Look for in Your Community.” It consisted of 15 educational packages to help educate citizens to look for certain things surrounding them that were indicators of condemns. What to look for as indicators of human trafficking, grow ops, chemical labs, guns and gangs, romance scams, cyber bullying etc., and how to deal with it and report it.
Next, we recognized the number of privately owned security cameras protecting private homes and businesses and had to figure out how to utilize them. We developed Project StreetView, a camera registry. Citizen can register the fact that they have cameras with YRP. Police DO NOT have direct access to camera recordings, but when there is a neighbourhood occurrence, officers are sent (to their car computers and hand held devices) a list and map of where cameras are located and are able to attend at those locations within minutes of an occurrence, ask for permission to view recorded footage and begin the investigation. No time delays and a lesser number of officers required to work the area to collect vital information.
Currently we are establishing a Community Ambassador program for citizens to assist YRP in getting the word out.
All members of ISCAC have had their backgrounds fully vetted and approved by YRP.
